Three important questions to ask when choosing your photographer | Arvada newborn photography

I love a deal, but can we all agree that the cheapest option, isn’t always the best option? When it comes to safety, especially my children’s safety, I definitely think twice before trying to save a buck.

We hear a lot of talk about safety when it comes to our children in the car, on a changing table, or in their crib but, I don’t often hear people talking about safety when it comes to your baby at their newborn portrait session.

Newborns can be easily hurt falling from a posing bag, out of a prop, or just being improperly posed, and not all photographers have taken training to learn how to safely care for a pose a newborn at their session.

When choosing your photographer, remember, it is ok to ask your newborn photographer to ensure your baby’s safety. A professional photographer is anyone who is charging for sessions and because there are no laws or requirements for the type of training a photographer needs, it can be hard to tell what training, if any, that photographer has had to learn their camera, posing, or newborn safety.

So what questions should you be asking before hiring a newborn photographer?

Have you taken any safety training for posing newborns?

There are many options for training including many online courses, mentoring with other more experienced photographers, or in-person courses. I was originally trained to safely pose newborns back in 2007 when I worked in a commercial children’s studio. However, since my training there only covered a handful of poses I continued my training with online courses in 2010 when I launched my business. My training included safety for posing bag poses, buckets or props and safely posing newborns in family portraits.

Each photographer may have slightly different training since there isn’t a standard or official certification program for photographers. The important thing is to make sure that your photographer has taken safety training so your baby doesn’t get injured during your session.

A slight side note on this before I move on. Most of the paragraph above applies to posed newborn portraits of the baby alone and with family members. Many newborn photographers offer lifestyle newborn sessions. These are sessions, typically in your home, where your newborn is photographed in their crib, casually cradled in your arms, and in other everyday scenarios. While your child's safety is still a factor in these sessions basic common sense is typically all that is needed to keep your baby safe. While it is still important to ask a lifestyle newborn photographer about safety, their answer will likely look a little different and that is ok.

What precautions do you take to keep the baby safe and comfortable?

Safety and comfort should be the top priority over getting the shot. The reality is some shots may take up to 30 minutes to get your baby calm and relaxed. True professional newborn photographers will take the time to calm and soothe your baby until they are relaxed and comfortable in the pose. We also use tricks like white noise machines and heaters to calm your baby. Your photographer should be using safety measures like always having someone within arms reach when your baby is on the posing bag or on a prop, weighing down the bottom of baskets and props to prevent them from tipping, and making sure your baby is fully settled into the pose before letting go to take the shot.

Are the props and studio area sanitized between sessions?

Wraps, blankets, and newborn outfits get washed in between sessions with a natural, fragrance-free laundry detergent. We like to keep a chemical-free studio for the safety of everyone, especially our littlest visitors. We have opted to use Force of Nature vinegar-based cleaner which has been EPA approved for use against Covid-19 and kills 99.9% of germs. This allows us to keep a clean and sanitized studio without having an environment that is covered in toxic chemicals.

Baby milk bath sessions are coming back! | Arvada baby photographer

Babies grow and change so quickly during the first year of life. That tiny baby that was born just months ago is now playing, sitting, and maybe even crawling. My milestone sessions were designed specifically to capture important milestones like this. Each month I offer a slightly different milestone session theme to help you capture all the moments of the first year of your baby’s life.

This month’s baby milestone session is designed for babies 6-18 months. These baby milk bath sessions are perfect for any baby who is sitting well on their own and loves to play in the bath! I have 2 different themes for the bath sessions, the strawberry bath and the duckie sessions.

Balloon and floral cake smash | Arvada Baby photographer

Cake smash sessions have become a tradition as much as a senior portrait session is for a high school senior. They are a beautiful way to celebrate a baby’s first birthday and to capture a time when they are growing and changing so quickly. One of the things I am most excited about with the new studio space in Arvada is the ability to do cake smash sessions indoor for those who do not want to do them in their home. This session however is one that I shot in my own home 9 months ago, I cannot believe that I haven’t shared this beautiful baby girl on my bog yet! She is just too precious not to share even if it is almost a year later.

Every cake smash session starts with an idea. Sometimes it’s a theme, sometimes its just a few colors. Little miss Ruby’s mom knew she wanted to have a pink and gold cake smash. She saw another smash that I did last year with pink and gold flowers and loved it but I wanted to make her smash even bigger and better than the last and so I suggested the balloon arch with the flowers and vines incorporated and luckily she loved the idea!

When I do a cake smash I provide everything for the session so our next step, after I found the perfect balloons and floral, was to choose an outfit. I already had this adorable little sparkle dressing in my collection that was perfect with this theme so I just hand-made a custom headband to match the décor and complete the look!

The next step was the cake. I found a beautiful image of a cake similar to this in purples and knew it would be perfect. When you choose a smash cake you want the majority of the design to be on the side of the cake because that is the part that gets photographed the most. Luckily my favorite baker Cherry on Top bakery in Thornton, Colorado always takes my vision and makes it even better than I described!

You can expect three types of images from your cake smash session, first, before cake images, typically taken on the smash “set as your cake smash however the studio now gives me the space and freedom to do a second look for your before images if you would like. New we bring out the cake, this park looks in the photos like to take about 5 minutes but in reality I have had some kids take over and hour to get messy with the cake so don’t worry if your baby doesn’t dig right in. After the cake I can now offer milk bath images in my adorable little bath tub!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Truth Photography!

I was so honored to be able to celebrate with families in a new way this year with studio sessions in the Arvada photo studio located off of 80th and Wadsworth. The studio was beautifully decorated for the Holidays including this beautiful bed set. This was one of a couple of holiday sets that were available. I am so excited to be sharing this gorgeous space with two other photographers over the next few months and hopefully beyond!

Here are some of my favorite images from family and milestone baby sessions in the studio last month. Welcome to the studio space | Truth Photography Arvada Colorado Photographer

I am so excited to announce that I now have a studio space available for winter sessions!

Introducing the Arvada Studio! The Studio is located off of 80th and Wadsworth in Arvada and is perfect for newborn sessions, baby milestones, cake smash sessions, and even family and maternity shoots.

The Arvada studio, which I am currently sharing with two other local photographers, offers a lounge area with a changing table and hair and makeup station. A fully equipped newborn room with a newborn posing bag and additional props, wraps and outfits beyond those in my own collection. A seasonal room for limited edition seasonal sessions, cake smash sessions and baby milestones sessions. The final room, the “bedroom” features a bed for newborn family shots or baby milestone sessions, and two couch areas perfect for families, maternity or kids!

I am now booking for the following types of sessions, space on all sessions is limited.

Studio newborn shoots. January-April ONE slot available per month. Newborn only and Newborn family sessions available up to 3 hours time as needed.

Cake smash session. January-April TWO slots per month. Choose from dozens of ideas from my inspiration board or previous sessions or choose your own theme and I will design you a custom set. Cake smash includes the cake, outfit, and decorations, before cake images, the cake smash, and an after cake milk bath shoot. Please book a minimum of 3 weeks in advance to ensure that I can order your cake, décor, and outfit on time.

Limited edition Valentine’s sessions. Ages 3 months to 10 years. 3 dates Monday, January 17, 9 am to noon, Monday, January 31st noon to 2 pm, or Sunday, January 23rd, 1 pm-4 pm.

Outdoor newborn family session | Westminster Colorado

I get excited every year when the weather gets warm because while I can offer beautiful outdoor session all year for families and maternity, newborn sessions can only be done fully outdoors during the warmer months.

This family not only chose me to do one of my favorite types of sessions for them but also allowed me to style them with items from my collection. Initially we were going to have dad in a light blue shirt but he really wanted to wear the maroon shirt. I was glad I had the perfect maroon wrap for baby to tie the look together. Moms gown, jewelry, the girls dresses and the floral crowns/headbands were all from my collection as well. In the end I was glad he decided to wear his maroon shirt as these colors looked beautiful together.

Eliana pink and gold first birthday {Denver Cake Smash Photographer}

I get this excited for the cake too! Isn’t little Eliana smile precious here! I had so much fun photographing this precious girl!

Every baby treats the cake smash differently, most take forever to even try the cake. Some babies get excited about the cake right away and then quickly lose interest, either way, I can get adorable portraits.

Eliana took awhile to get excited about the cake and didn’t make as big of a mess as some babies BUT she gave the most precious smiles and beautiful expressions. The photos from her session are absolutely precious, so cure in fact that I had a hard time narrowing down which to show in this blog. So, here are all of my favorites!

In home newborn portraits {Westminster Newborn Photographer}

Most photographers recommend that you have your newborn portraits taken in the first 14 days of your baby’s life. The reason for this is in the early days babies sleep better for their session, relax into the poses, and don’t get as upset about being posed and moved.

With all the craziness of the last year though, a lot of parents missed that 2 week milestone. Wyatt’s mom contacted me when he was already 2 months old to schedule his portraits in December. If you missed to 2-week “cutoff” as well don’t worry, with a little extra work to settle your baby you can still have beautiful portraits of your baby at this age.

Wyatt was a little cranky at first, but after awhile we were able to get him to settle down and fall asleep for a few minutes. When he woke back up a few minutes later when I moved him to a new pose (another downside of older babies is they are very unlikely to sleep through being moved) he was happy and smiley for me!

In the end, we got some adorable images of him and mom and dad loved them!

I would love to photograph your baby. Ideally, you should contact me before your baby arrives but if your little one is already here I would still love to help you capture their first portraits!

Celebrate your child's milestones {Denver mini sessions}

My almost 11 year old son was born yesterday…while I know this statement isn’t true, sometimes it sure seems like it is. How many moms can relate? It seems like just yesterday he was a little toddler stealing our kittens ball to put in his toys or singing along to every word of the song on his toy piano “Is there anything more fun than playin the pianna, howd about, howd about playin with some fwiends!” he hates it when we sing that to him and would probably be mortified that I am telling this story, but the point is, as you have heard a million times and know is true as a parent, it just flies by so quickly and one day not too far in the future you are going to realize that your now infant is closer to moving out that he is to the date he was born.

One thing I will always be thankful for is all of the quality images I have on my children at these young ages. One thing I have always wanted to do in my business is be able to provide this same gift to my clients and so I asked myself how to I create sessions that are affordable enough for clients to book several times a year or even monthly for growing babies while still creating a sustainable business model where I don’t have to overwork myself with editing or take away the weekend session slots that keep me in business. And from the question Monday Milestones was born.

Monday Milestone sessions are designed to preserve the Milestones like first smiling portraits around 3 months, 6 month “sitter” portraits, 9 month standing images, birthday shoots, religious celebrations, school portraits, tween and teen images and more.

I addition to themed or seasonal shoots each month I have create your own days specifically designed for whatever occasion you want to celebrate.

Because these sessions are on a weekday preserving my weekends for full sessions I am able to offer them at a lower cost without needing to take so many each dat that I can’t serve each client well. While these 5 pose sessions typically only take 10-15 minutes I have reserved a 30 minute slot for each client and I am only booking 3 sessions each day to make sure that I am not stressed and exhausted by the final session. I want each client who books one of these sessions with me to get my very best work.

In addition, I am still helping these clients create beautiful custom wall art from their session with a selection and design appointment via zoom video chat 1-2 weeks after their session. This allows me to give the same service that my full session clients receive without the added time commitment for me to travel to your home.

The great thing about these sessions is the session fee is only $100 and prints start and only $30 and include a matching digital file. How to display your family photos: Story boxes {Denver family photographer}

Do you remember those old photo albums with the sticky sheets inside that you just stuck your photos to? For anyone who has no idea what I am talking about you bought them at the store empty and each page was similar to a thick card stock covered in a stick material and then a clear sheet of plastic. You pulled back the plastic and stuck your photo to the sticky part and then stuck the plastic back over. They were great until your images started to fade from the acid in the paper and glue and then permanently stuck to the goo…

I recently heard my Storyboxes described as a modern-day album, it’s not a bad description. Like those sticky albums or the sleeve albums that were also popular you can easily switch out the images in the box however unlike those, the Story box protects your images instead of ruining them.

A peek into your selection appointment {Colorado Mountain Family Photographer}

I started to write this blog post almost a month ago now. I had it “fully finished” and just needed to add images and schedule it to publish. Then as if she knew I needed to know what clients were thinking when going into their selection appointment, I had a client ask if the selection appointment was required. I explained yes I require them since it is too difficult to put your order together via emails back and forth and doing the selection appointment is actually less work for me. Then she explained why she was concerned about meeting for her image selection.

The last session they had had with a photographer had gone great, but the appointment with him after did not go so well. After discussing it with her for a while I realized what had really gone so wrong is they had gone into with no idea what to expect. Their photographer hadn’t really given them any information on what would happen at the meeting or what prices for their products looked like. In addition, their photographer had used a common “this is the only time you can buy these” tactic that is honestly meant to scare clients into buying more so they don’t “lose the images”.

I take a totally different approach to my appointments. My job at the selection appointment isn’t to scare you into buying your images now. I actually want to go into this meeting having already discussed with you what you are hoping to purchase from the session based on your needs and budget. My job at these meetings is to simply help you choose the best images for the products you have selected and make sure you LOVE the finished art! So that said let’s take a look at the process from start to finish so you know exactly what to expect from your appointment.

First, you may be asking, “what is a selection appointment?” The selection appointment happens around two weeks after your session once I have edited all the best images from your session. I will come to your home and help you “select” the images you want to hang in your home and then the products you want to use to display them. Today I want to go through what the selection appointment looks like so you know what to expect when I arrive for yours!

Viewing the images

The first thing that I will do for your selection appointment is to show you all of the edited images as a slide show. Because I use an online program to show your images, I will first need to log into your wifi so make sure to have your login information handy.

After I am logged in I will show you all of the images in a slideshow format. Just sit back, enjoy the show and maybe make a mental note of any favorites.

Narrowing down the images

Next, I’ll help you narrow down the images for your wall art. We will go through the images one by one and I’ll have you tell me if it’s a favorite or not. If you are thinking “but I love them all” no problem, if you are purchasing a wall art set or Storybox valued at $1,000 or more you will receive all the images shown as digital files. If you choose to just get a few images you will receive matching digital files for all images selected.

Creating your wall art

By this point, you should have had several opportunities to view my session planning guide that shows all of my products and the pricing. Hopefully, you have a good idea of what wall art you are interested in before we meet so we can focus on putting your favorite images on those products. I will take this time to show you what the images would look like on those products on the wall. We can play with different images and layouts in the designer until we find the perfect wall art to fit your home.

Ordering your products

After we have wall art selected and any additional gift items you need I will submit your order for you. The payment for all collections or a la carte items is due at your selection meeting. After your products are ordered your digital files will be delivered via an online gallery within one week and you can download them from there, your printed products normally take around 2 weeks but can take up to 4 weeks to arrive and I will personally deliver them to your home when they arrive.

Isaac's newborn session {Broomfield CO newborn photographer}

After 12 years of photographing newborns you learn all of the tricks to get a newborn to sleep soundly for their session and they all worked on baby Isaac!

This little man joined our world on December 27th and came in to see me mid-January. After a full belly of food and a nice warm swaddle he slept like a dream for most of his session. The space heater and mama’s heartbeat sounds I had going nearby probably helped with that as well!

I am so in love with the images from his session that it was hard to decide which to share here! Even his two year old sister cooperated for some images with her brother!

When the session was edited and ready for the family to view I met up with them in their home in Broomfield to show them not only the finished images, but some ideas for displaying them in their home. After each session I create a few gallery mock ups to show, and then together with the family we can choose a favorite or create a custom look and play with different ways their favorite images until we find one that they love!

To be honest my very favorite part of this session was delivering printed art to the family. When I arrived mom answered the door with her daughter right behind. As soon as she saw the image of her and her brother together that they had printed she gasped, grabbed it from mom and hugged it! It was the cutest thing I have ever seen!
